DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on qualitative approaches in linguistic research providing students with an introduction to qualitative data collection, fieldwork methods, and analysis, with a strong emphasis on ethical practices. This study-unit prepares students to independently conduct qualitative research in linguistics, with an understanding of key concepts and methods suitable for diverse linguistic settings.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Provide practice in asking relevant and incisive language research questions;
- Familiarise students with the difference between eliciting data compared with more direct data collection;
- Tackle different qualitative research scenarios for language study;
- Dip into the basics of data coding.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Assess the relevance and value of qualitative research methods for different linguistic research contexts;
- Conduct basic fieldwork studies with an awareness of ethical implications;
- Recognize ethical considerations in collecting and analyzing qualitative data.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Address ethical concerns in qualitative data collection and linguistic fieldwork;
- Organize, label, and securely store qualitative data in preparation for analysis;
- Effectively report on, analyze, and discuss qualitative data findings.
