DESCRIPTION This study-unit consists of exposure to specialised vocabulary in areas of education, health, technology, legal affairs and technical current affairs. The practical component consists of recordings of students' discussion of topics related to these areas and discussion with colleagues and lecturers on possible improvement in clarity and idiomatic expression in LSM. The study-unit will include work involving both the reception and expression of discourse in LSM.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are to:
- Extend the student's LSM vocabulary in the listed specialised areas (education, health, technology, legal affairs and technical current affairs);
- Extend the student's receptive skills in interacting with Deaf signers;
- Extend the student's ability to express him/herself in LSM in specialised areas;
- Enable the student to become a confident signer in settings requiring specialised use of LSM.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand (this is assessed through part of the examination at the end) and use appropriate vocabulary related to topics medical topics, educational subjects, technology (and the social media), legal affairs,as well as abstract language expressing emotions;
- Understand (this is assessed through part of the examination at the end) and use specialised sign language in different areas.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Relate confidently to any Deaf adult in formal settings;
- Converse confidently in LSM making use of technical language;
- Understand the conversation of Deaf adults in formal settings (this is assessed through part of the examination at the end);
- Understand Deaf questions related to formal settings (this is assessed through part of the examination at the end) and provide clear explanations in Maltese sign language.

There are no set MAIN or SUPPLEMENTARY readings for this course since it is a language course for which there is yet no written grammar. The students will need to refer to the dictionaries available.
