DESCRIPTION This study-unit consists of the use of Maltese Sign Language used for describing and explaining within the fields of the arts, mathematics, science and technology subjects taught up to sixth form level. It also includes the creation and use of temporary signs (a topic covered in the study-unit on Maltese Sign Linguistics) for concepts and labels that come up in new areas. The practical component consists of using Maltese Sign Language to deal with texts and expansions of texts used in secondary schools and sixth forms.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are:
- To provide students with opportunities to use appropriate LSM vocabulary in the fields of the arts, mathematics, science and technology subjects taught up to sixth form level;
- To provide students with opportunities to express what they see in LSM; video-data and express it in English and/or Maltese when requested;
- To provide students with the skill to express him/herself in LSM when the technical vocabulary is not yet known or has not yet been developed;
- To enable the student to become a confident signer in specialised settings;
- To use appropriate grammatical LSM discourse;
- To identify which discourse in LSM is ungrammatical and why it is ungrammatical and to change it to grammatical discourse.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Use appropriate LSM vocabulary in the fields of the arts, mathematics, science and technology subjects taught up to sixth form level;Sign confidently in LSM making use of technical language;
- Express what he/she sees in LSM video-data and express it in English and/or Maltese;
- Express him/herself in LSM when the technical vocabulary is not yet known or has not yet been developed;
- Provide clear and technical explanations in Maltese Sign Language;
- Answer questions related to technical subjects taking into account the student's level of knowledge of the subject to enable him/her to move up in their knowledge.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Define technical terms in LSM;
- Use technical language within clear LSM discourse;
- Converse confidently in LSM making use of technical language;
- Provide clear explanations of a large range of formal texts in LSM.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

There are no set MAIN or SUPPLEMENTARY readings for this course since it is a language course for which there is yet no written grammar. The students will need to refer to the dictionaries available.
