| DESCRIPTION | Introduction to Video Production is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of audio-visual production, through theory and practice. Students will be trained in the different aspects of the five production stages, from concept stage to final product, which include the development of an idea into a proposal, filming, editing and screening of their original work. They will also be trained in the use and application of film language and will be expected to discuss and analyse critically different genres of production shown in class and during tutorials. Tutorials are an integral part of the study-unit as students will have the opportunity to present ideas and discuss their own ongoing productions. This one-on-one time is essential as the focus is on the individual difficulties that each student might be facing during the production process. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provide a hands-on opportunity to students through the development of their audio-visual production skills. The theoretical aspect will cover all aspects of film language and will be applied to analyse and discuss production techniques and examples shown in class. During these sessions, students are encouraged to compare and contrast a variety of techniques, as well as analyse their effectiveness as well as deconstruct the manner in which they have been produced, in relation to composition, lighting, camera angles and movement, editing techniques and the use of audio, amongst others. Furthermore, this knowledge will equip them with the skills that will serve as a guide in the production of their own films, which is the main element of their assessment. The study-unit also aims to provide students with critical abilities for both their own work and that of their peer. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify, critically assess, compare and contrast a variety of film genres; - Be fluent in film language (shots, camera movement, lighting set-ups, editing terms, etc); - Be capable of applying filming techniques and their employment in contributing to a narrative and communicate emotion; - Apply editing techniques and use them in audio-visual storytelling; - Be aware of the emotional impact that lighting techniques have on the visual; - Be cognizant with audio and how it can create layers of meaning in production. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Create a production proposal; - Produce a short screenplay; - Draft a talent release form; - Plan for a filming session; - Draft a shooting schedule; - Operate a DSLR camera; - Perform basic video editing using open access software; - Operate entry-level audio and lighting equipment.
