Study-Unit Description

CODE MDS2008

TITLE Pathology

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Faculty of Medicine and Surgery

DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides a solid grounding in general aspects of diseases processes through a series of lectures, followed by interactive small group tutorials and practicals. It provides training in the recognition and interpretation of pathological changes and diagnostics in order for the student to understand specific clinical diagnostic problems.

The lectures deal with cell adaptations and cell death, wound healing, neoplasia, disorders of metabolism and homeostasis, nutritional and environmental diseases and genetic investigation of the genome. Tutorials introduce the student to the role of the cytology and histopathology laboratories in the diagnosis and management of disease while others deal with immune diseases and the clinical aspects of cytogenetics and molecular biology. The laboratory based practical sessions emphasise the important core aspects of cell injury, inflammation, cardiovascular disorders and neoplasia.

Study-unit Aims:

To provide a foundation for understanding the pathogenesis of disease and the role of various pathology in the diagnosis and management of patients.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Classify disease based on aetiology and pathogenesis;
- Define specific pathological terms;
- Discuss the effect of injury and the response of cells and tissues;
- Describe the basic pathological mechanisms in inflammation, ischaemia, immunity;homeostasis, cytogenetics and molecular biology;
- Describe the characteristics of neoplastic cells and the principles/molecular basis of carcinogenesis and tumour development and progression;
- Discuss the pathogenesis of vascular disease;
- Delineate the various types of abnormal cellular accumulations;
- Explain the role of nutritional imbalances in the causation of disease;
- Describe the role of environmental factors in the pathogenesis of disease;
- Describe the type of laboratory tests available for clinical use;
- Explain the problems in obtaining specimen material for clinical diagnosis;
- State the problems encountered in laboratory processing that affect test results.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Distinguish alterations in chromosome structure in relation to specific syndromes;
- Explain how karyotpe analysis is performed;
- Recognise different classes of disease on gross and microscopic specimens;
- Distinguish between benign and malignant tumours in terms of gross and microscopic morphology and clinical behaviour;
- Interpret common symptoms and signs in terms of possible underlying pathology;
- Identify risk factors for disease;
- Identify and distinguish between the clinical laboratory disciplines;
- Describe the principles underlying diagnostic laboratory tests;
- Correlate the use of simple diagnostic laboratory tests with clinical and morphological features of disease.
