DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores Principles of Good Practice, Psychology and Sociology in relation to Health & Medical Care, Clinical Systems Improvement & Patient Safety.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit explores issues in health care related to psychological and sociological processes which are critically important for health care & delivery at an individual, family, work place and societal level.

It also explores issues related to Professionalism, Good Medical Practice, Complaints & Litigation.

Furthermore it explores important issues in health care related to Clinical System Improvement & Patient Safety.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

A: Psychological and Social Aspects of health care

a) Describe normal human development and common health problems associated with lifespan;
b) Discuss how behaviour and health are constrained by social contexts in which we live;
c) Identify ways in which personal and social factors interact, preventing illness and promoting health;
d) Describe illness behaviour and what people do when they feel anxious about their health;
e) Describe how people cope with illness, loss, disability and stigma;
f) Describe processes to facilitate change;
g) Describe issues of culture & communication;
h) Discuss issues related to coping with difficult patients;
i) Explain issues of abuse.

B: Legal

a) Explore issues related to mistakes, complaints & litigation.

C: Medical Leadership

a) Explore issues of clinical systems improvement and patient safety;
b) Discuss principles of professionalism & good medical practice;
c) Discuss issues of power within the medical profession and the relevance of humility, compassion and respect, recognizing also limitations and accountability.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

A: Psychological and Social Aspects of health care

a) Help patients understand that change is possible and what is required to achieve this;
b) Help patients move through a process of change;
c) Support patients through periods of difficulty, loss, and grief;
d) Work with persons and patients from different backgrounds and cultures;
e) Work with difficult patients;
f) Prevent and intervene in situations of potential or ongoing abuse.

B: Medical Leadership

a) Work within and develop a system of clinical systems improvement and patient safety;
b) Always practice principles of good practice and professional behaviour.
