DESCRIPTION This study-unit tackles the management of diabetes mellitus in the paediatric, adolescent and geriatric sectors of the population as well as those suffering from acute or teminal illness, socially deprived subjects, and minority populations of diverse cultural and religious beliefs. The special needs of women with prexisting diabetes or gestational diabetes throughout their pregnancy will also be highlighted. The dietary requirements and pharmaceutical aspects of diabetes care in these subjects will be analysed and the importance of adherance to evidence based recommendations for the management of diabetes in these special populations will be reviewed.

Lectures, tutorials and case based discussions as well as seminars will be used as the main teaching modalities.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to enable students to evaluate and reflect on the various challenges that special populations face in dealing with diabetes mellitus. On completion of this study-unit students will be in a position to adjust and tailor treatment depending on the individual's need. Students should be able to critically analyse and evaluate outcomes for strategies in dealing with special situations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. Discuss available evidence and apply guideline recommendations to the management of diabetes in these special populations;
b. Describe the barriers to the delivery of holistic effective and integrated diabetes care in special situations;
c. Plan health care that is patient centred, with due consideration of their needs, provision of adequate support and the development of individualised management plans with realistic targets appropriate to the needs of the person concerned;
d. Critically analyse specific needs of individuals with diabetes against the backdrop of personal, cultural, socioeconomic and religious diversity;
e. Discuss age and gender specific differences in the management of diabetes in special populations and in pregnancy;
f. Understand the impact of regional and population differences in access to healthcare;
g. Discuss the need to establish equity in healthcare with reference to the social determinants of health.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. Identify strategies to overcome the barriers to the delivery of holistic effective and integrated diabetes care in special situations;
b. Appraise available guidelines and evidence in relation to the management of diabetes in persons with special conditions;
c. Implement effective, tailored treatment strategies, with appropriate attainable and individualised targets;
d. Effectively utilise available resources to optimise the management of diabetes in these special instances;
e. Provide communities and societies at large with essential support in order to ensure that the needs of patients are met.
