DESCRIPTION The study-unit consists of a facilitative pedagogical approach where after two introductory lectures with group discussions, students are given a list of topics in management from which each student (or group – depending on the size of the class) searches for a case to discuss in the class.

Following each case presentation discussion takes place in small groups which then share their opinion/conclusion with the rest. The facilitator may intervene clarifying ethical, legal, and societal/cultural issues and any guidelines. Individuals use their case to collect a group discussion and then make a personal reflection as their assignment. Assignment at the end are shared.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit has three specific aims:

- Help learners recognize and apply the notion of ethics and integrity within professional life as a manager
- Assist learners to interpret ethical issues and professional standards in management and business, as well as their impact not only on the relationship within the organization and with customers but also the societal impacts including environmental issues.
- To recognize firsthand potential ethical dilemmas that professional managers may experience in the course of their duties.

The use of cases aims to help learners recognize ethical issues which may arise in his/her professional life moving from feeling to rational thought.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Recognize ethical models ranging from utilitarian to deontological, and apply them in management.
- Relate to current professional standards expected from management.
- Infer on ethical standards, behaviour and other relevant dynamics within the organisation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- To employ professional and ethical behaviours with superiors, peers and subordinates;
- To generate and choose options / outcomes that are fair and ethical when dealing with customers, especially when dealing with promotional material;
- To generate and devise management behaviours that respect the health and safety of employees in a typical work environment;
- To identify and employ current ethical professional standards in typical management roles.
