DEPARTMENT Business and Enterprise Management

DESCRIPTION Objectives

Building on MGT1011 Introduction to Management, this course provides an active and applied view of managerial competencies and the execution of key management functions engaged towards achieving organisational goals. Emphasis is made on the application of course material to current management issues and students are encouraged to interact and participate.

Content

The course introduces students to the complex ethical and social responsibilities facing organisations, managers and employees. Organisational culture and approaches to making ethical judgements are addressed, as are stakeholder forces and ethical dilemmas facing managers in an increasingly international scenario.

The fundamental managerial function of planning and decision making is covered in detail. The strategic management process including its planning and implementation is thoroughly charted and various tools and models explored and applied. The fundamentals of decision-making are introduced. Main aspects of other key management functions are treated in relation to the context of business administration.

The course comprises lectures during which class interaction is encouraged - current cases are discussed and applied to illustrate theoretical underpinnings.
Attendance at scheduled classes is mandatory and vital to the course - active listening should be supplemented with thorough reading. Participation is an important factor in the learning experience.
