DESCRIPTION In an ever more globalised world, cultural issues have emerged in increasingly multicultural environments. These all have an impact on life in general and on the workplace too. Managing across cultures has become an everyday reality and managers need to tackle issues of race, class, gender, religion, identity and work ethics from a multicultural perspective respecting the needs of their staff while enhancing their organizations efficiency that can be made more effective due to this multicultural environment. Furthermore, the concepts of time and space vary across cultures so living in a multicultural environment requires an understanding of these factors.

Study-unit Aims

- To foster an understanding of the dynamics involved in cross-cultural understanding and management in an increasingly multicultural and globalised world, and workplace.
- To highlight the roles and responsibilities of managers working in a multicultural environment, including skills such as negotiation, conflict resolution, communication and mediation.
- To explore different team-building issues, including ideas of tolerance, appreciation of different values and ideals, different understandings of concepts such as time and space in an international and multicultural environment.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Recognise a multicultural environment; identify the issues at stake, manage these issues if and when they arise, Manage the situation ethically, maximise on the strengths of a multicultural team.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

communicate effectively within a multicultural situation, negotiate a multicultural environment, manage an organisation that employes people with different cultural backgrounds
