DESCRIPTION Communication is an integral part of management strategy. The current business environment requires management leaders apt not only in oral and written communication but also in having an understanding of communication from a strategic point of view. Managers need to be effective in communicating with their target audience ranging from employees, customers to numerous stakeholders.

The study-unit will help the students understand the process and best practices for business communication. It will cover general business communication principles, written communication, oral communication, and social media communication. From a practical perspective, topics covered will include writing reports, memos and effective emails, organisation and delivery of speeches (impromptu and prepared speeches), persuasion speeches, defending one’s views before a confrontational audience, working in teams and negotiations. The weekly sessions comprise taught classes, teamwork and practical sessions all of which will be of value both at the workplace and throughout the MBA programme.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at self-developing students in enhancing their communication skills in the business environment. It aims to develop the verbal and non-verbal factors that lead to effective communication. This includes writing and speaking skills for various media, teamwork, and interpersonal communication skills necessary for managers. Students learn communication principles, strategies, and methods through discussions, group work and case studies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be:
- Able to understand the role of business communication;
- More confident in communication making use of various media;
- Able to employ principles of effective group communication;
- Able to work in a team in preparing reports and presentations;
- Able to communicate in a more effective way in the business environment.
