DESCRIPTION Managing change is a day-to-day reality for most social care managers and over the course of their careers they will have built up a set of practice-based skills and experiences about what has worked in the past that they can apply to future change situations. However, they have often found it hard to access the potential learning from change management experiences not only from the social care services sector but also from other sectors and the more formal research base.

This unit addresses this gap through demonstrating how change tools and approaches can be deployed in adult social care. Organization Development (OD) and Change Management is a process that applies behavioural science knowledge and practices to help organizations achieve greater effectiveness, including increased financial performance and improved quality of work life. OD and change management differs from other planned change efforts such as technological innovation, training and development or new product development, because the focus is on building the organization’s ability to assess its current functioning and to achieve its goals. Moreover, OD is oriented to improving the total system – the organization and its parts in the context of the larger environment that affects them. Indeed, an understanding of OD and change management is an asset to all those involved in organizational life. This unit will therefor provide a thorough understanding of the principles and implications of OD and change management and extends this understanding by challenging students to think critically and deeply about implications related to change programmes through the use of case studies relating to social care services and class discussions.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to achieve three major goals. First, it helps students to understand the need for organisational and strategic change, and lead change processes within management structures. Students are geared to contemplate change programmes from a critical perspective rather than from a prescriptive mode. Second, the unit aims to nurture and develop the required skills portfolio to bring about planned change, particular in those institutions that offer social care services. Third, it seeks to appraise the relevance of organisational development and change management in a new world order characterised by continuous transformations in the political, economic, social and technological arenas.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the various stages of the OD and change management process;
- Provide examples of different types of interventions and their applications;
- Appreciate organizations from a systems perspective;
- Evaluate OD and change management as an integral part of an organization’s life;
- Appraise the future of OD in a global context and an Innovation Era.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify, categorise and act upon critical variables that are crucial to change management processes;
- Formulate a holistic rather than a fragmented vision when formulating, implementing, monitoring and evaluation organisational change;
- Comprehend and utilise a different array of approaches and tools to instil managerial change practices within social institutions.
