| DESCRIPTION | Students will be introduced to contemporary macro organisational theory. In particular, the unit will examine the development of institutional approaches and the socioeconomic processes they shed light upon. Starting from Marxian and Weberian influences on organisation theory, post-modern approaches and social constructionism are used to reveal the interplay among economics, society and organisational phenomena. In particular, governance of socioeconomic processes is outlined as the cornerstone of the different theoretical approaches on organisation. Study-unit Aims: 1. To enhance students' knowledge on the organisational phenomena offering multiple views; 2. To assist students in understanding the interaction between organisations, social processes and the environment; 3. To provide students with an opportunity to see how business and management practices emerge and gain legitimacy from the interaction between organisations, social processes and the environment. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. comprehend and describe the main theoretical approaches dealing with organizations and governance; 2. apply those theoretical approaches to the current challenges of organizations and governance; 3. develop original interpretations and critiques of current organizational decisions and events; 4. interpret wider implications (outside the business domain) of the adoption of specific management tools & techniques starting from the understanding of how they are produced, diffused and adopted at the organizational level; 5. comprehend high level academic texts. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. evaluate management interventions and practices through the application of organization theory; 2. develop a critical approach to organizational decisions and outcomes; 3. reflect upon business organizational themes to put them in a wider social perspective; 4. make a critical interpretation of applied practitioner-oriented texts in the light of theoretical approaches and implications.
