DESCRIPTION | This study-unit first tackles the challenge of understanding the management of people and organisations in the context of fast changing and unpredictable environmental conditions. The three central imperatives of effective people management, namely, managing yourself, managing your networks and managing your team form the basis for managing organizations of varying shapes and structures. The second part of the unit delves into the issues and concerns of managers related to the professional management of human resources covering employee relations, planning, recruitment and selection, and training and development. Study-unit Aims The broad aim of the Study-unit is to develop people and organisational management competencies and skills applicable to a dynamic and fast changing business environment. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify alternative approaches to people management and organisational structures; - apply the acquired knowledge to pro-actively structure organisations that fit the realities of existing conditions; - apply effective people and organisational management processes and practices. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to maximise organisational performance through appropriate people and organisational management skills that include: - organisational development; - self, network and team management; - employee relations; - planning; - recruitment and selection; - training and development. Watson T.J., Organising and Managing Work: Organisational, Managerial, and Strategic Behaviour in Theory and Practice. Pearson Education, 2nd ed., 2006. SUPPLEMENTARY READINGS Adult and experiential learning processes will be applied and students will be guided to access reading and research material from international journals, including electronic journals available through UoM Library website. |
