DESCRIPTION This study-unit is targeted to first year midwifery students. It is designed to allow students to develop the knowledge and skills required in the administration of drugs mainly via the topical, oral, rectal, vaginal, subcutaneous and intramuscular route including controlled drugs. This is covered through the use of lectures, demonstrations of skills and opportunity of hands on practice in the clinical laboratory.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are to:

- Introduce students to principles of drug administration and the legislations involved;
- Familiarise students with the skills involved in the administration of drugs through the different routes.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain how drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolised and excreted;
- Identify factors that influence the absorption of drugs and the factors that can interfere with the metabolism of drugs;
- Recognise the risks involved when administering drugs through the different routes;
- Discuss the supply, storage, administration, surrender and destruction of controlled drugs;
- Familiarise oneself with the treatment chart and understand the importance of documentation;
- Discuss the responsibilities of the midwife in relation to drug administration and correct disposal of sharps.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Administer drugs through the different routes including controlled drugs under simulated conditions;
- Correctly dispose of sharps to protect self and others;
- Explain the different sections of the treatment chart and document correctly the drugs administered;
- Recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and discuss the management of this condition.
