DESCRIPTION This study-unit will enable the midwifery students to gain evidence based knowledge, skills and attitudes to care for women during the puerperium.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to equip pre-registration midwifery students with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to give physiological care to women during the first six weeks post partum.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Demonstrate knowledge of the physiological changes that occur in women during the six weeks post partum;
• Understand the role and responsibilities of the midwife in monitoring normal physiological changes;
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of early signs of deviation from normal physiology.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Perform daily postnatal assessment and examination as basis for monitoring normal physiology and potential complications;
• Provide consistent health care information to women to enhance self-care;
• Provide sensitive care to women differing health care needs in particular to women with diverse culture and religion.
