DESCRIPTION Learning Objectives:

By the end of the study-unit the students will be able to:

- Evaluate new trends in women’s reproductive health from a sociological perspective;
- Demonstrate knowledge of the various theories that underlie sociological perspectives of midwifery;
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the social and cultural context which influences women and their lives and in which they become parents;
- Demonstrate knowledge on the diversity of family structure, social and demographic changes that impact on the family;
- Gain an insight into issues of stereotyping and racism within the context of midwifery care provision and practice.

- Women and society;
- Women and poverty;
- The family;
- Race and ethnicity;
- Refugee women;
- Maternal infant attachment;
- Medicalisation of childbirth;
- Social support and childbirth;
- Fathers and childbirth;
- Childbirth and sexual abuse during childhood;
- The new reproductive technologies: threat or opportunity;
- Breastfeeding: a natural phenomenon or a cultural construct.
