| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is targeted at third year midwifery students. It is designed for students to develop the knowledge and skills required for the administration of intravenous therapy, venepuncture and intravenous cannulation. It is delivered through the use of lectures, demonstrations of skills and opportunity for hands-on practice in the clinical laboratory. By the end of the study-unit, students will be able to administer drugs and fluids through the intravenous route, perform venepuncture and intravenous cannulation under simulatory conditions. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to assist students to develop the knowledge and skills required for the administration of intravenous therapy and to safely perform venepuncture and intravenous cannulation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss the indications for an intravenous infusion and the measures taken to promote asepsis; - Discuss the complications of intravenous therapy; - Describe the different types of fluid solutions commonly used for an intravenous infusion; - Familiarise oneself with the different equipment used in intravenous infusion therapy; - Become aware of the local and systemic complications associated with intravenous therapy; - Describe the formula for calculating the flow of an intravenous infusion; - Understand how drug dosages are calculated; - Discuss the midwife's role and responsibility in relation to intravenous infusion therapy; - Discuss how fluid balance is monitored and the significance of this; and - Familiarise oneself with the Blood Transfusion Protocol and know the complications associated with blood transfusion. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Calculate the flow rate of the intravenous fluid in drops per minute and in milliliters per hour; - Calculate drug dosages and administer intravenous drugs under simulatory conditions; - Detect complications associated with intravenous therapy and be able to take the necessary actions; - Recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and discuss the management of this life threatening condition; - Perform venepuncture and insert peripheral intravenous cannualae under simulatory conditions; - Prepare an intravenous infusion under strict aseptic technique; and - Use the volumetric and syringe pumps.
