DESCRIPTION Learning Objectives:

By the end of the study unit the student will :

- Be aware of the economic dimension affecting the family;
- Be aware of the needs of the unsupported mother;
- Appreciate and respond to the needs of grieving and bereaved families;
- Be aware of stressors within family relationships;
- Develop appropriate communication skills and helping strategies;
- Develop skills in recognizing the needs of ethnic minorities;
- Recognize special needs and refer appropriately.

Content:

Social Welfare:

- social benefits;
- welfare benefits;
- children’s benefits;
- special allowance for the vulnerable.

Fostering and adoption:

- family breakdown;
- alternative families;
- legal aspects;
- women’s groups, voluntary & others;
- family law.

Unsupported parent:

- single parents;
- divorced;
- widowed.

Grieving and bereave:

- miscarriage, abortion;
- stillbirth;
- neonatal death;
- disabled child;
- cot death;
- labour which did not meet expectations (debriefing skills).

Family stressors:

- alcohol, drugs and violence;
- child abuse;
- marital disharmony.

Helping strategies:

- listening skills;
- verbal/non verbal communication;
- accepting, non judgemental approaches.

Ethnic minorities:

- groups with specific cultural needs.

Helping agencies:

- knowledge of appropriate referral.
