DESCRIPTION | Learning Objectives: By the end of the study unit the student will: - Acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to accurately assess and monitor the condition of women/infants who are acutely ill and take the necessary emergency measures in the doctor’s absence; - Be able to apply midwifery philosophies, roles and functions within the critical care contexts; - Be aware of the psychosocial impact of the critical care/high dependency upon midwifery staff; - Further develop their skills of resuscitation and basic-life support; - Be knowledgeable of the ethico-legal issues encountered in these units; - Be able to work within a multidisciplinary team context. Content: - Assessment of the critically ill mother/baby; - Resuscitation procedures of an adult and infant, the responsibilities of the individual team members before, during and following resuscitation; - Selection of appropriate midwifery models in critical care settings; - Basic and advanced life support; - Monitoring the critically ill mother/infant; - Principles of midwifery care and management required by mother/infant with the following:     - Ruptured Vasa Praevia;     - Presentation and prolapse of the umbilical cord;     - Shoulder Dystocia;     - Rupture of the Uterus;     - Acute inversion of the Uterus;     - Amniotic Fluid embolisim;     - Basic life support measures;     - Shock: hypvolaemic and septic;     - Ketoacidosis;     - Eclampsia;     - Disseminated intravascular coagulation;     - Rehabilitation of the critically ill woman;     - Psychological and social effects on the woman, partner, family and staff;     - Ethical – legal issues related to caring for the critically ill woman.
