DESCRIPTION This study-unit is targeted at fourth year student midwives. Midwives need to use managerial and leadership skills in their everyday clinical practice. They have to be knowledgeable on the identification, assessing and on responding to clinical decision-making about pregnancy, childbirth, postnatal and its associated care that will lead to the elimination (insofar as is possible) of undesired outcomes and the promotion of desired outcomes. Midwives will need to understand the risks, using the evidence as it becomes available and to put those risks into proper perspective. Midwifery students will in the near future have to use these managerial skills as a tool in the planning and provision of safe systems of care.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study unit are to:

- familiarize students with the the various approaches to management of midwifery care;
- develop the students in the practice of management skills in a clinical setting;
- familiarize the student about the midwife's role in risk management and in clinical governance;
- introduce the student to the way procedures associated with clinical management and those associated with risk management are reported.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will:

- be knowledgeable of managerial and leadership skills that are used in midwifery care settings;
- have sound knowledge of the midwife's role in risk management and in clinical governance;
- be knowledgeable in the reporting procedures associated with both everyday midwifery care management and in the reporting of procedures associated with risk management.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will become compentent in the decision making process during the management of care of their clients. Students will be able to document and report procedures associated with clinical management and assocated with risk management.
