Study-Unit Description

CODE MME2206

TITLE Materials Selection

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Metallurgy and Materials Engineering

DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces and presents different approaches for the selection of materials in engineering design. The role of materials selection within the design process is described, and the concepts of translation, screening and ranking of materials introduced and explained. The correlation of the materials selection process to the selection of manufacturing process is discussed. Several examples of practical cases are introduced and debated, and individual selection exercises are assigned to each student as their coursework for this unit.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are to:
- define the selection of materials in the context of engineering design;
- clearly indicate the importance of defining the parameters describing a materials selection process;
- enable students to select from and apply a range of techniques for materials selection.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- analyse materials selection requirements in engineering design;
- describe the conditions defining the selection of materials for engineering components;
- compare selection techniques and select the correct approach to the problem;
- analyse the problem and select the appropriate material;
- correlate the process of material selection to process selection;
- report the process using the correct techniques.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- define the function of the component for which the selection of a material is required;
- list the constraints defining the choice of materials which can be considered for the application;
- describe the objectives which are applied to the selection of the optimum material for the application;
- analyse the potential of alternative materials by means of performance indices and material selection charts;
- compare objectives by means of the digital logic method and related ranking techniques.
