DESCRIPTION | This study-unit gives an applied and hands-on introduction to various electronic laboratory instruments such as the oscilloscope, function generator, digital multimeter and the DC power supply. Necessary foundations and background theory including principle of operation of various instruments and equipment, measurement errors, measurement systems (analogue and digital), measurement techniques of electrical quantities such as voltage and current, power measurement, resistance measurement, inductance measurement, capacitance measurement together with gain and phase shift measurement will also be provided. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit introduces the foundations and the practical use of various electronic laboratory instruments such as the oscilloscope, function generator, digital multimeter and the DC power supply. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - apply the basic measurement techniques, instruments, and methods used in everyday practice; - familiarise with both analogue and digital instruments, measurement errors and uncertainty, data acquisition, instrument controls and measurement systems. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - use various laboratory instruments such as the oscilloscope, function generator, digital multimeter and the DC power supply; - apply the most appropriate measurement method and instrument for a particular application, and how to assemble the measurement system from the physical quantity to the digital data in a computer.
