Study-Unit Description

Study-Unit Description

CODE MNE3801

TITLE Introduction to Automated Robotics

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Microelectronics and Nanoelectronics

DESCRIPTION The study-unit provides an overview of robot components including type joints and links, reference frames and the operation of a robot withing a workspace. Robotic actuators, sensors and control electronics are presented including H-bridge drives, electric, stepper and servo motors, PLCs, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. The study-unit aims to provide robot analysis and kinematics, including position analysis, transform representations, simulations and modeling of robotic maneuvering.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit introduces the basic elements of robot fundamental building blocks and the use of Matlab toolboxes which can be used to simulate and model robot kinematics. The necessary mathematical modelling to define and understand robotic kinematics are presented.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- provide an overview of robot components and the operation of a robot within a workspace.
- provide robot analysis and kinematics.
- comprehend image processing techniques and how image processing can enhance automated robotic maneuvering.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- build and simulate the behaviour of basic autonomous robots.
- comprehend the basic robot building blocks including robotic actuators, sensors and control electronics are presented including H-bridge drives, electric, stepper and servo motors, PLCs, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- comprehend robot analysis and kinematics, including position analysis, representation of transformations - rotation, translation, forward and inverse kinematics.
- know how to use of Matlab toolboxes for the simulation and modeling of robot kinematics.
