DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces the steps that are needed to acquire and appraise existing evidence that may be used to guide clinical decisions. Building on the knowledge that was attained in the pre-requisite of this study-unit, the student will become familiar with specific methods that can be used to carry out a literature search in order to generate the most appropriate evidence required to answer a particular research/clinical question. Additionally, the latter part of the study-unit will provide direct guidance to students to set their own research question and undertake a literature search as a gradual introduction to their dissertation process. Topics included are:

- How to define a research question in mental health research: PICO and PEO;
- How to search for literature;
- Types of articles (Anecdotal, Grey, Empirical);
- How to record and present a literature search – audit trail (Table form, PRISMA etc.);
- How to interpret mental health research papers;
- How to critique literature (CASP etc.);
- Understanding basic statistics;
- Understanding basic qualitative analysis and reporting; and
- Direct help to students in formulating their own research question for the dissertation.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to guide psychiatric nursing students on how to use appropriate methods to search the available research, appraise the resulting evidence and reflect on how to apply it to practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Show understanding of how to write a research question;
- Reflect on how to apply evidence to clinical practice;
- Differentiate between the various types of articles in the literature; and
- Discuss basic statistics and qualitative analysis.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Carry out a literature search using various resources;
- Document the search process in a succinct and concise manner;
- Appraise the evidence found; and
- Select the best evidence that may answer a research/clinical question.
