DESCRIPTION This study-unit is the final practice (clinically based) assessment for the programme. It takes place in the final year of the course of studies. A period of preparation through lectures, independent study, clinical mentoring, group work and seminars precedes the examination. Students are assessed against a set of learning outcomes based on the domains of competency outlined in the mental health nursing student handbok, which serves as the clinical handbook for the entire course. These domains include “Therapeutic Relationship; Assessment; Care Planning and Coorindation; Nursing Interventions; Managing Psychiatric Emergencies; Ethical Issues; Education & Research and Legal Iimplications”. Clinical Competency is measured against safety and competence factors, professional skills and underlying knowledge, personal interchange with patients, response to untoward incidence, care management and evaluative activities, team working, teaching and work allocation criterion.

Study-Unit Aims:

To asses the student's ability and skills in clinical practice as a safe and competent practitioner at the level of a qualified mental health nurse.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Reflect on one's own performance in relation to their professional competencies;
- Demonstrate knowledge and competence in the clinical field;
- Demonstrate effective care management of individual patients;
- Evaluate own effectiveness within a care management environment;
- Adapt to changing clinical situations;
- Provide quality patient-centred care;
- Apply theoretical models to the clinical setting.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Co-ordinate and collaborate with other Mental health professionals for a complete and thorough assessment;
- Conduct a Mental State Examination including appropriate documentation and relevant nursing action;
- Demonstrate the ability to take a history from the client and their relatives/primary carers, then identify which aspects needs prioritisation;
- Assess for client’s changes in mood, thought content, affect, behaviour, communication and speech;
- Identify and measure specific psychiatric symptoms using psychometric rating scales;
- Formulate care plans in collaboration with clients, based on short and long-term goals reflective on the client’s own needs and concerns;
- Administer and record medications;
- Plan and conduct effectively under the supervision of the mentor a Group therapy session and a One to One session with a therapeutic aim;
- Identify escalating behaviours and contributing factors leading to client escalation, whilst expressing them- selves in a safe environment;
- Perform a neurological observation;
- Respect client confidentiality;
- Assist clients to take an active part in their community as well as be involved in mental health awareness and promotion events.
