DESCRIPTION Managers and company leaders are expected to take decisions related to internationalization more often than before. Internationalization, whether in the form of exporting of products or the delivery of a service in various modes, is a reality for companies in any sector, including in Malta.

This study-unit aims to provide students with a deep understanding of the dynamics of internationalization and to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop and execute successful internationalization strategies.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:
- Demonstrate and reflect on how internationalization is a reality today, presenting opportunities and threats to enterprises;
- Explain the various modes of foreign market entry and the techniques companies are using to be successful in internationalization;
- Discuss the approaches companies can adopt to build the necessary internal and other capabilities to plan and execute internationalization efforts;
- Explore, with students, the key issues and strategic options available to enterprises in specific situations through selected case studies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Evaluate, in writing and in discussion, the opportunities and risks enterprises face because of globalisation on various levels;
- Within the context of class discussions, students will be able to appraise the various market entry modes and their appropriateness for specific cases;
- Critically review the main theoretical arguments explaining international entrepreneurship and internationalisation;
- Formulate and analyse a list of critical issues and strategies that have been proven to impact the successful internationalisation of companies;
- Explore, based on discussions with successful international entrepreneurs, additional strategic issues and lessons learned.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Given case examples, students will be able to make adequate predictions on the readiness or otherwise of companies for internationalization;
- Construct, within given parameters, an effective strategy for the internationalization of a given product or service, individually or in small groups;
- Effectively assess a potential international opportunity and propose a go vs no-go decision;
- Create, based on class interaction and individual preparation, a high-level protocol for collecting and disseminating market intelligence;
- Develop and deliver an effective presentation with diagnostic and propositional content.
