Study-Unit Description

CODE MRT5090

TITLE Principles of Moral Theology: Advanced Seminar

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Moral Theology

DESCRIPTION The study-unit revisits the main themes of fundamental moral theology —theological anthropology, natural law, the virtues, determining the morality of our actions—and ponders the issues more deeply in view of the ongoing renewal of moral theology, the guidance offered by the Magisterium, the fluid situation of our contemporary culture and for their pastoral consequences. Through the study of key texts from notable moral theologians and the Magisterium, the study unit takes an analytic approach to the main themes in contemporary fundamental moral theology, like: the moral subject, Thomistic natural law, moral action, high casuistry, virtue, conscience and discernment.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To focus on issues of Christian moral life that are of particular importance today;
- To investigate the argument that has evolved in the course of the Christian tradition on such issues;
- To bring out the importance of these issues for the renewal of Christian moral life and moral theology after VCII;
- To tease out the relevance of these issues for pastoral praxis and dialogue in culture.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- analyze and evaluate critically the various philosophical and theological positions that underline contemporary attempts at renewing moral theology;
- distinguish and systematize the moral reasoning behind recent Magisterial documents.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- assess, by means of critical reading, certain selected texts on fundamental moral theology;
- formulate methods of practical reasoning;
- propose a critical evaluation of moral arguments, thus demonstrating their coherence and persuasiveness when applied to a specific issue.
