TITLE Children’s Understanding of the World through Environmental Education

DESCRIPTION This study-unit’s main emphasis is on the development of attitudes and values conducive to sustainable development. This is achieved through interactive sessions that provide learners with an opportunity to critically review their lifestyles and choices. The rationale of the unit is that environmental education is not a subject that is learnt, but a life perspective that needs to be lived. The unit’s main logic is that having gone through a learner-centred educational process that focused on active learner participation, student teachers will then be able to provide similar experiences through their teaching.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit has two major aims:
- the personal development of student teachers in relation to sustainable development through a critical review of their personal lifestyles and choices;
- equipping student teachers with the skills necessary to aid young learners in the discovery of the environment and the development of attitudes related to sustainable development principles (relevant to their experiences).

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- explain the concept of sustainable development in terms of its four pillars: the environment, society, economy and culture;
- examine the impact of human activity on the environment and the quality of life;
- assess the impact of education for sustainable development (as across-curricular theme) on the educational system;
- outline the educational needs of young children regarding the exploration of the environment and related issues;
- list and discuss various teaching/learning pedagogies in environmental education; and
- evaluate local and foreign environmental education programmes and initiatives.

2. Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- use the principles of sustainability to critically analyse their lifestyle;
- examine and clarify their attitudes and values regarding environmental issues;
- use a variety of teaching methods to promote autonomous learning;
- develop skills in the organisation of environmental education initiatives; and
- critically analyse local and foreign environmental education programmes and initiatives.
