DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to support and challenge student teachers in developing a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the teaching and learning of geography. This is achieved through critical reflection of a variety of themes selected to increase awareness of geography’s varied aspects. It will show how pupil entitlement to high quality learning is related to a curriculum that is both appealing and relevant whilst also contributing to the broader educational process.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to broaden perspectives of student teachers of geography on a selection of curriculum concerns and developments and how these might impact upon their work.

This is done mostly by contextualising, by posing thought-provoking questions and through discussion.

This helps to deepen an understanding of the role, purpose and potential of geography within the secondary school curriculum.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify and develop ways how to keep abreast of contemporary issues and developments in the subject.
- Compare and contrast as well as making clear connections between good geographical education and subject topicality.
- Critically discuss issues and concerns confronted regularly by geography teachers as a way how to develop as a conscientious practitioner.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Apply theory to practice by developing ideas for a curriculum which has both appeal and relevance to the pupils both as subject matter and to the real world.
- Reflect, evaluate and intelligently discuss coherent thought on the issues discussed.
- Present ideas for lively lessons that take into account the issues discussed.
