| DESCRIPTION | Learning Outcomes At the end of the study-unit students will be able to: - Analyse the factors involved when making sensible choices for houses; - Discuss the various types of accommodation available to suit different family needs; - Interpret architectural plans to be able to discuss with architects; - Plan the structure and interiors of houses with suitable living spaces for all the family; - Plan with an emphasis on energy-saving and environmentally-friendly features; - Appreciate the elements of good design; - Identify appropriate local materials which can enhance interiors; - Design indoor and outdoor spaces to reflect one’s own lifestyles. Contents This study-unit begins by discussing the factors that need to be considered when choosing the location for a home. Various types of accommodation to suit different family situations and changing needs are also discussed. Students will be able to interpret architectural plans and discuss aesthetics, traditional features and the architectural character of Maltese homes. The planning, construction and finishing of houses will be outlined, with emphasis on energy-saving features, security and low maintenance. This study-unit will also try to give knowledge and design skills to students to be creative when planning interiors, analyse the possibilities, think of the details, assess and access the technologies available and then plan interiors sensibly. The second part of the study-unit concentrates on planning interiors and living spaces as well as focus on thorough kitchen planning.
