DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with the fundamental techniques in brass playing. It aims at helping students mastering the basic technical aspects of brass playing, such as proper warm up, breath control, flexibility, tone production, endurance, intonation and instrument techniques. Throughout the unit, students will be introduced to related literature and taught how to establish for themselves a systematic approach to daily practice.

This study-unit aims to:

(a) implement the fundamental techniques in brass playing such as the importance of a good warm up, appropriate inner and outer embouchure, and proper posture;
(b) assist students to establish methods of self-evaluation;
(c) enable students to attain the right attitude and skills to brass playing;
(d) help students come up with creative problem solving.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) recognise the fundamental techniques in brass playing when approaching a performance;
b) evaluate the benefits of research in aspects such as the history and development of the instrument;
c) explore the core repertoire of the instrument.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) apply the technique acquired to the playing of the selected pieces;
b) produce a well-controlled tone;
c) extend the range on his/her instrument whilst at the same time sustaining it throughout by applying the right breathing technique and embouchure.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Pre-requisite Primary / Intermediate level of knowledge and technique in Brass playing.

Non-music studies students must sit for an audition prior to acceptance.
