DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to give students basic technical fluency and creative skills so that music distribution (online) becomes an effective tool for the creative composer. Creative skills that can be applied in professional projects, such as composition for Internet sites, games, and video clips will be explored at a basic level. The study-unit also aims to introduce students to the Maltese and British copyright law, the history of the WWW, bandwidth, browser compatibility, current creation tools, and audio compression.

Study-unit Aims:

- To develop skills in the use of technology in music making which are necessary for music employment as a composer;
- To develop skills in areas of creative composition that are not primarily notation based;
- To demonstrate students how to decode/compress audio files and the use of software for creative music making;
- To provide students with an opportunity to acquire fundamental practical skills in the use of basic technology setups;
- To assist students in understanding legal issues related to music distribution online.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) recognise the utility of software to compress music files (in various formats);
b) identify software for creative music making related to WWW projects;
c) appraise the theoretical principles that underpin music distribution;
d) attain familiarity with legal issues related to music distribution online.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) use software to produce music;
b) compose music/sound design to various media.
