DESCRIPTION This study-unit will develop the basic skills of keyboard (piano) playing, keyboard techniques (posture, hand position, fingering, etc.), sight reading, and basic skills in harmony and playing by ear. The study-unit is designed for the student with little or no prior keyboard experience. The student will be guided through the basic literature chosen and, by the end of the year, will be able to perform (from memory or through reading) basic keyboard pieces from the repertory, and engage in creative expression on the piano.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are to help the student acquire the abilities to:
- Perform keyboard pieces applying basic reading and co-ordinative skills;
- Create and play from memory any assignment required by the performer;
- Take informed decisions about the choice of repertoire needed for any arising occasion.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- play exercises and solo keyboard literature/repertory;
- demonstrate fluency at the keyboard;
- compose and recreate music on the keyboard; and
- work and rehearse independently to prepare basic performances on the keyboard.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- freely engage in creative expression;
- explore the technical elements of music;
- demonstrate the basic artistic knowledge required to form and communicate ideas about piano music;
- play various styles of piano repertoire and accompaniments; and
- take informed decisions about the choice of repertoire needed for any arising occasion.
