DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces the student to the concept of harmony as the result of linearly conceived structures. Definition of chords and inversions, cadences and modulations is outlined. It also introduces the student to the concept of the dominant seventh chord and secondary dominants. Written exercises are assigned and listened to in order for students would be able to assess their attempts and those of their peers, as well as the suggested workings by the lecturer.

Study-unit Aims:

The primary purpose of this study-unit is to instill in the student the instinctive judgement for the proper selection of the strongest harmonic progression and to deal effectively with modulations and sequences and to properly use the dominant seventh chord and secondary dominants.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- recognise chord progressions effectively;
- recognise stylistic features of the common period;
- identify harmonic and melodic interrelationships;
- harmonise a figured bass;
- harmonise a melody;
- gain practical understanding of secondary dominants, irregular resolutions, sequences and modulations.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- write correct and effective doubling and progression of chords;
- harmonise pastiche exercises up to the use of secondary dominants;
- modulate to nearly related keys;
- apply correct and informed use of more advanced chords.
