TITLE Music, Media and the World Wide Web

DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to introduce students to on-line music distribution and the analysis of music in relation to the visual media. Topics such as: The Copyright Law, The History of the World Wide Web, Browser Compatibility, Music Creation and Music Creation Tools, 3 PAUDIO, Audio Compression and Bandwidth will be discussed in detail. This study-unit also deals with the relation between music and the other media particularly the digital arts and Film.

Study-unit Aims:

- To develop skills in the use of technology in musical distribution which are necessary for much employment (business) as a composer and performer;
- To develop skills in areas of composition that are not primarily notation based. For example: the decoding/compression of audio files and the use of software;
- To acquire advanced level of practical skills in addition to those in music making;
- To acquire understanding in areas such as law;
- To give pupils the knowledge and skills required to compose music for films, television, video games, presentations and portable devices.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Compress music files (various formats);
- Use specific software for creating music;
- Understand the theoretical principles that underpin music distribution (world-wide web);
- Understand legal issues related to music distribution.
- Understand the different relationships which music can have with the moving picture;
- Understand the compositional approach required when composing for such interactive media as video games, presentations and hand-held devices;
- Have basic knowledge of the film, television and video game market;
- Have basic knowledge of music software used to compose music for video games and also to synchronise audio with picture.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Use hardware (computers/sound cards);
- Use software (to create music for various mediums);
- Understand legal matters related to music downloads;
- Compose a short piece for film;
- Compose a short piece for television;
- Compose music for interactive media;
- Analyze the music in films, television, video games, presentations and hand-held devices in relation to the medium in question;
- Using the analysis techniques acquired to be self-critical of one's productions and those of others.
