DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces more advanced harmonic procedures and progressions, including the principal chromatic chords. Written exercises are assigned and listened to in order for students to evaluate and assess their attempts and those of their peers, as well as the suggested workings by the lecturer.

Study-unit Aims:

The primary purpose of this study-unit is to define the harmonic vocabularies of modern composers and to instill in the student the ability to recognize different forms of harmonic styles and to emulate them in exercises.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) explore the use of advanced harmonic processes as used by composers from 1900 to the present;
b) evaluate the richness and diversity of styles that emerged during this period.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) expand the acquired skills in harmony, such as working out advanced exercises independently, analysing in depth the harmonic styles of modern compositions, and make the right melodic and harmonic judgments applying the above-mentioned knowledge;
b) work creatively and with more awareness as to style, and apply effectively and intelligibly all the available harmonic techniques available till this level.
