TITLE Placement

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Music Studies

DESCRIPTION The study-unit starts by introducing students to the concept of placement, mainly by highlighting what is expected from each participant in terms of efforts and outcomes (2 hour lecture).

Students are then assigned a place of work where they have to carry out 52 hours of placement, equivalent to four (4hours) per week for the 13 weeks of the regular academic semester. The total of 52 hours can be divided in either 1 full day of work per week (8 hours), or two half-days (4 hours each) per week, or one session per week (4 hours) according to the needs of both students and entities hosting the placement. The schedule of the placements shall not overlap with the university timetable. The placement has to be conducted in Malta, unless specifically stated. Students may extend this work experience to 56 hours subject to approval by the Department of Music Studies and the entity hosting the placement.

A mentor from the entity hosting the placement is to be appointed for each student. The role of the mentor is to assist the student to develop and enhance practical knowledge in the area of cultural and musical studies. A member of the academic staff of the Department of Music Studies shall also be appointed, in order to follow both practical and academic aspects of the placements.

The students shall be assigned a specific task by the entity hosting the placement. This task shall be reviewed and approved by the academic staff member of the Department of Music Studies and named the ‘learning agreement’. The tasks assigned to each student have to be completed by the end of the placement period, unless specifically stated by the entity hosting the placements.

The students shall keep a logbook where they have to summarise the activities carried out for each working session, together with a description of the learning experience. This logbook shall be sent to the selected academic member of staff at the Department of Music Studies for a mid-way review.

Placements are open only to Bachelor of Music (Honours) students. The number of places available will be announced every year. Applicants will be ranked according to a set of selection criteria based on their academic performance, similar to those used for the ERASMUS programme.
