DESCRIPTION This unit will build further on the fundamentals of an accomplished practice in orchestration. It will explore the creative potential of present-day orchestral and popular instruments and the specific notational requirements of contemporary composition. The unit will focus on writing for woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion and popular instruments, culminating in a final assignment for orchestra.

Study-unit Aims:

• To enable students to score in an appropriate manner for an orchestra, writing idiomatically for the instruments used;
• To enable students to score imaginatively for an orchestra, whilst keeping; within the technical restraints of each instrument;
• To enable students to present a score correctly and legibly, using appropriate indications such as string bowing;
• To enable students to develop imagination and artistic creativity in the handling of orchestral instruments.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) score in an appropriate manner for orchestra, writing idiomatically for the instruments employed;
2) possess knowledge of how to write out a full score correctly and legibly, using all the normal conventions of score writing;
3) score imaginatively for orchestra whilst keeping within the technical restraints of each instrument;
4) discuss matters relating to orchestration techniques, instrumental timbre and instrumental characteristics.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1) demonstrate competency in orchestration assignments;
2) engage with aesthetic aspects of orchestration technique;
3) expand familiarity and understanding of good orchestration skills while putting them in practice;
4) develop self-critical skills to solve potential problems encountered while orchestrating.
