DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on the clarinet/saxophone repertoire across the relevant historical periods. Sessions will be based on discussion and analysis of major works for the clarinet/saxophone in relation to issues in performance, theory of musical expression and representation, and will be followed by a critical review of representative works.

Study-unit Aims:

The main aim is to provide the clarinet/saxophone performance student with the necessary knowledge and skills to identify, analyse and perform works from the core repertoire through the various musical periods covered. Focus will be made on the rendition of 'authentic' performances with a good sense of historical background and musical interpretation.

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) identify the core repertoire for the clarinet/saxophone from the Classical, Romantic and 20th Century periods;
b) analyse major works for the instrument in relation to style, performance practice and historical background.

Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) work on the performance of core repertoire with a good general sense of historical perspective and musical interpretation;
b) evaluate the issues within the rendition of 'authentic' performances and implement them within the musical performances.
