DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed to prepare music students who are proficient in an orchestral instrument to develop and master the required techniques to play in a professional orchestra and attain the skills to prepare them for an orchestral audition programme. The study-unit is open to students of violin, flute and piccolo, clarinet and bass clarinet, trombone, timpani and percussion. Other instruments may be considered. The study-unit comprises practical participation with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. It also includes individual coaching in preparation for orchestral auditions.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to prepare music students who already have an advanced level of proficiency on an orchestral instrument to acquire the skills, knowledge, and capacities to become professional orchestral players, further focusing on excellence in performance and the musicianship skills required for orchestral performance.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Comprehend the techniques required in orchestral playing;
- Comprehend orchestral conducting;
- Recognise the importance of aspects such as intonation, balance, interpretation, and effective orchestral playing;
- Gain knowledge of the canonic orchestral repertoire;
- Enhance his/her knowledge of orchestral instruments.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Successfully play in an orchestra;
- Work with others, collaboratively, utilising a variety of team structures and working methods, and understanding group dynamics and handling interpersonal issues;
- Respond effectively to orchestral conducting;
- Negotiate effectively with a variety of agencies, thus developing interpersonal skills;
- Communicate effectively in a variety of ways, verbally and in writing, using appropriate communication and presentation technologies;
- Constructively develop self-reflection by exploring strengths and weaknesses;
- Foster autonomy in learning leading to a continuous and steady progress in professional development;
- Communicate effectively across a wide range of socio-cultural scenarios involving popular and high-culture events (such as opera);
- Take effective decisions about any aspects of combined arts and cultures;
- Enhance his/her organisational skills by setting aims and objectives for individual and collective projects.
