DESCRIPTION This study-unit will focus on techniques of scoring for the orchestra including fundamentals of string technique: structure of the instruments, timbre, range, bowing and effective scoring for strings, techniques for woodwind, brass and percussion instruments and scoring for full orchestra. The basic elements of orchestral playing and conducting will also be discussed and analysed. Scoring, with an eye towards different historical styles, shall be presented and discussed.

Study-Unit Aims:

a) Examine and study the basic technique of orchestration;
b) Teach students to score for string ensemble, wind ensemble and full orchestra;
c) Enhance students' score-reading and critical listening skills;
d) Introduce students to the historical and modern techniques of orchestration.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) define elements of orchestration and orchestral playing;
b) identify the principal elements of conducting;
c) review orchestral scores;
d) explain the fundamentals of historical development of orchestration.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) analyse instrumental techniques;
b) differentiate between different styles of orchestration;
c) discriminate between different instrumental timbres;
d) examine and orchestrate scores for string and wind ensembles, and full orchestra.
