DESCRIPTION This study-unit will focus on developing a thorough understanding of the vocal genre and will dwell on the relevant technical skills, clarity of creative intent, and contemporary cultural relevance in aesthetic approach when handling composition for voice. The study-unit will also consider philosophical and musicological issues that are of relevance to vocal composition. This will help in securing the use of balanced self-criticism as part of the creative process.

Study-unit Aims:

This unit aims to immerse student composers in a broad range of recent stylistic developments in vocal writing through detailed technical and analytical study of models. The study-unit will deal with the application of specific techniques in vocal composition that will secure confidence when hadling tools and materials of composition for voice, while giving ample space for creative innovation in compositional activity.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. recognise and discuss the main established practices of vocal music;
2. understand and comment in detail on a variety of 20th-century compositions;
3. respond creatively to given issues or problematics of vocal composition;
4. further develop and display technical competence in vocal writing.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. compose suitable contemporary works written idiomatically for voice;
2. compose suitable contemporary works for larger forces, such as orchestra or mixed ensemble plus soloists/choir.
