DESCRIPTION The unit will explore and investigate the different vocal, musical and interpretative characteristics of a selection of arepresentative repertoire of the student’s voice type. Here the repertoire will consist of vocal works of the 20th century where the student will concentrate on performance and interpretation. A good level of vocal technique is expected prior to entering the course.

Study-unit Aims:

The main aim is to provide students with a good level of performance skills to improve their vocal capabilities to succeed as performers. Students will also attain a range of vocal techniques (including extended vocal techniques) that will help them perform pieces from different periods of western musical history.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to understand and perform repertoire from the twentieth century, essentially from the end of impressionism, towards expressionism and the second Viennese school.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. Interpret a selected repertoire with a high musical level of performance and a good understanding of style;
b. Improve their public performance skills through better stage confidence and a better musical preparation.

A selection of vocal repertoire from the works of these composers: Igor Stravinsky, Luigi Nono, Anton Webern, George Gershwin, Leonard Berstein, Arnold Schoenberg, Francis Poulenc, Hans Werne Henze, Kurt Weill, Oliver Messiaen, Maurice Ravel, Aaron Copland, Bela Bartok, Zoltan Kodaly, and Benjamin Britten.
