DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with the opportunity to work within an area of music studies that may be more directly relevant to the research leading to their dissertation while grounding the student in the fundamental holistic and interdisciplinary paradigms of the study of music in society and culture. It will both deepen and broaden their familiarity with specific texts in the study of music as a human and artistic activity before moving on to the writing of their dissertation.

A selected number of readings will be discussed and scrutinized for both content and writing style. Readings will focus on: (1) the interrelationship of music with the other arts and the human sciences; (2) the music concept; (3); (4) the interrelated analysis of the 'music itself' and the world in which it exists; (5) music and ideology; (6) the politics of musical participation (7) music, text and language relationship; (8) music and its role in a range of social and cultural contexts; (9) case studies in music related to the student's own research interest/s. Students will be required to read, assimilate, discuss and produce a critical report of the literature.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at:
a. introducing participants to a number of fundamental concepts, theories and issues in the study of music as a socio-cultural phenomenon;
b. enhancing participants' skills required for literature review;
c. familiarizing students with the diverse research interests in music studies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a. attain an insightful understanding of the various contexts that produce and shape music;
b. gain more knowledge in social theory and music analysis;
c. attain more understanding of the world's music traditions more broadly.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a. produce a critical report of the literature;
b. read and discuss critically;
c. apply the selected readings to own research.
