DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides postgraduate students with the practical skills required for independent research in music with particular reference to: (1) bibliographical methods and management; library resources, online and hardcopy abstracts and indices; (2) resources; manuscript sources, discographies, specialist sound/music libraries; (3) developing a research area; exploring references and evaluating sources; (4) music processing; (5) word processing skills; (6) research techniques; interviewing, onsite recording, ethnographic reporting, reflective practice, creative archive research; (7) writing techniques in music; academic writing, citing sources, approaches to literature review, styles of writing in music.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to help students:
a. undertake independent research;
b. attain the latest techniques in music research;
c. write effectively and proficiently about music;
d. apply a range of resources and theories.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. recognize a range of research techniques and approaches in music research;
b. identify the various paths and approaches to the writing up of a dissertation;
c. recognize the importance of technology in the different stages of research;
d. value the benefits of researching music interdisciplinary.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. conduct interviews;
b. review related literature;
c. interpret data;
d. choose relevant examples to consolidate arguments, theories and hypotheses.
