| DESCRIPTION | Students will be exposed to Basic Nutrition and the effects of diet on the human body; the nutritional value of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, water, and fibre. Optimum nutrition for exercise and diet in relation to physical activity; weight control in relation to athletes; ergogenic aids and doping; Sports injuries, their causes, prevention and management. Precautions in regards to adverse ambient temperatures and jet lag. By the end of this study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the scientific elements in nutrition critical to achieving optimum results in health, fitness and athletic competition. - Illustrate the ideal mix, percentages, quality and quantity of the macro and micro nutrients. - Describe the optimum, healthy and performance enhancing methods for safe and effective body weight management. - Describe and judge nutritional requirements based on a food item: calories, quantity of protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and more. - Understand the various nutritional and performance enhancing supplements. - Describe the dangers of fad diets. - Understand the WADA Doping Code and its interpretation. - Describe the factors leading to sports injuries with appropriate examples. - Describe in detail the symptoms, causes and treatment of common sports injuries. - Explain in detail the preventative measures to reduce the risk of sports injuries. - Describe the initial care of injuries in sporting situations. - Describe the precautions one should take in regards to adverse ambient temperatures and jet lag.
