DESCRIPTION The study-unit instructs the student on how to conduct an independent literature review in a particular area of study, whilst supervising the student's work. The topics to be reviewed will be chosen by the Panel of Supervision. The student will be asked to write a written report on his/her work and make an oral presentation to an audience which will include the Panel of Supervision. He/she will be required to answer questions posed by the audience and shall previously have submitted an extended abstract describing the content of the seminar.

Study-unit Aims:

The main aim of this unit is for students to familiarise themselves with the current developments in the field of metamaterials, in particular thermo-mechanical metamaterials, through a set of lectures and guided independent study. The student will also learn how to conduct an independent literature review in a particular area of study under supervision.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Demonstrate familiarity with the state of the art in the field of metamaterials, auxetics and other negative materials;
• Confidently and correctly use literature databases, journal and patent literature;
• Formulate written opinions on topics from contemporary literature in metamaterials, auxetics and other negative materials.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Communicate succinctly in written form;
• Communicate visually his/her findings in a scientific forum;
• Communicate orally his/her findings in a scientific forum.
