DEPARTMENT Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures

DESCRIPTION This is an introductory study-unit in Phoenician and Punic in which the basic notions of Phoenician-Punic epigraphy and grammar will be dealt with. The grammar will be mainly learnt through a reading of select texts and it will be assumed that students following this study-unit already know the basics of Classical Hebrew. Select texts in Phoenician and Punic from Malta and from other Mediterranean countries will be studied and their context discussed. The select texts will have to be transliterated into the Hebrew “Square Script” and then translated into English. The problems of working with ancient unvocalized texts will also be highlighted.

Study-unit Aims

1. To teach students the more common forms of the letters of the Phoenician, Punic, and Late Punic alphabet.
