DESCRIPTION This study-unit examines students in a synoptic manner. Students have to demonstrate a critical understanding of ancient Near Eastern languages and an ability to integrate their knowledge and understanding of ancient Near Eastern literary traditions by translating select texts from their original language and providing a historical, cultural, and literary commentary. Students will prepare for this study-unit through personal study and tutorial sessions with the respective tutors, drawing upon pertinent subject matter covered during the course of degree programme.

Study-unit Aims:

- To integrate the knowledge and understanding acquired through the study of different ancient Near Eastern languages and literary traditions;
- To train students to develop an interdisciplinary sensibility and integrate linguistic, literary, and historical approaches to the study of ancient Near Eastern texts;
- To train students to adopt a synoptic approach and create thematic links between different ancient Near Eastern literary traditions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate a critical understanding of different ancient Near Eastern languages and literary traditions;
- translate select texts from their original language and provide a historical, cultural, and literary commentary;
- compare and contrast different ancient Near Eastern texts and/or literary traditions, and create thematic links between them;
- analyze a selection of ancient Near Eastern texts and evaluate competing interpretations.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- develop an interdisciplinary sensibility;
- synthesize and evaluate disparate, but related, sets of data;
- demonstrate a high level of critical thinking.
